RESUMO

Research consistently demonstrates that positive student-teacher relationships are fundamental to the healthy development of all students. However, we lack a Portuguese-validated measure of student-teacher relationships. In this article we present the adaptation procedures and the psychometric properties of a Portuguese version of the Student-Teacher Relationship Scale - Short Form (Pianta, 1992). Five hundred and thirty five teachers from 127 schools completed the STRS-SF. The results demonstrate that this adapted version of the STRS-SF has good psychometric properties, namely high reliability (α = .84 to .87) and expected construct validity, which were tested through exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses (χ2/df = 1.65, CFI = .96, GFI = .93, RMSEA = 0.05). This study also showed that the correlations of student-teacher relationship with students' demographic variables are consistent with the evidence in the literature about this construct. Finally, the study indicated that female teachers reported more closeness, t(530) = 4.06, p < .001 and better overall student-teacher relationships, t(530) = 4.90, p < .001. In the discussion, we analyze the implications of these results.

RESUMO

We assessed impacts on classroom quality and on 5 child language and behavioral outcomes of a 2-year teacher professional-development program for publicly funded prekindergarten and kindergarten in Chile. This cluster-randomized trial included 64 schools (child N = 1,876). The program incorporated workshops and in-classroom coaching. We found moderate to large positive impacts on observed emotional and instructional support as well as classroom organization in prekindergarten classrooms after 1 year of the program. After 2 years of the program, moderate positive impacts were observed on emotional support and classroom organization. No significant program impacts on child outcomes were detected at posttest (1 marginal effect, an increase in a composite of self-regulation and low problem behaviors, was observed). Professional development for preschool teachers in Chile can improve classroom quality. More intensive curricular approaches are needed for these improvements to translate into effects on children.

RESUMO

Quality of teacher-child interactions is central to prekindergarten children's learning. In the United States, the quality of teacher-child interactions is commonly assessed using the teaching through interactions conceptual framework and an associ/ated observational tool, the Classroom Assessment Scoring System (CLASS). This study examined: (a) whether there was evidence supporting three distinctive domains of teacher-child interactions in Chile (construct validity) and (b) whether these domains predicted end-of-prekindergarten language, academic, and executive function skills in Chile (predictive validity). The sample consisted of 91 Chilean prekindergarten classrooms (1,868 four-year-old children). The findings support both construct and predictive validity of the teaching through interactions conceptual framework as assessed by the CLASS in Chile. Implications for cross-country comparison of quality of teacher-child interactions in prekindergarten classrooms are discussed.

RESUMO

Juvenile meagre Argyrosomus regius (Asso, 1809) maintained in experimental conditions developed lateral and/or bilateral circular-shaped sarcoma within the opercular cavity. The sarcoma was dense, reddish and its growth from the branchial arch exerted pressure on the operculum forcing it to open. Histologically, the neoplasm exhibited marked proliferation of mesenchymal connective tissue composed largely of fusiform cells, which developed in a solid pattern accompanied by abundant mononuclear cell types. Multifocal areas of discrete necrosis were also observed, compatible with a sarcomatous proliferation. The immunological parameters analysed suggested an inflammatory response. No bacteria were isolated from the hematopoietic organs. However, Vibrio species, components of the normal seawater flora, were isolated from the tumour, which may have had a role in eliciting the immune response. No evidence of viral pathogens was found by electron microscopy. In order to look for cytogenetic alterations often linked to sarcomas, the diploid number and karyotype of this species were determined for the first time. An increase in the aneuploidy level was observed in sarcoma cell metaphase stages compared to other tissues. The aetiology of this tumour remains unknown.

RESUMO

The characteristics of tunable wavelength filters based on a-SiC:H multilayered stacked pin cells are studied both theoretically and experimentally. The optical transducers were produced by PECVD and tested for a proper fine tuning of the cyan and yellow fluorescent proteins emission. The active device consists of a p-i'(a-SiC:H)-n/p-i(a-Si:H)-n heterostructures sandwiched between two transparent contacts. Experimental data on spectral response analysis, current-voltage characteristics and color and transmission rate discrimination are reported. Cyan and yellow fluorescent input channels were transmitted together, each one with a specific transmission rate and different intensities. The multiplexed optical signal was analyzed by reading out, under positive and negative applied voltages, the generated photocurrents. Results show that the optimized optical transducer has the capability of combining the transient fluorescent signals onto a single output signal without losing any specificity (color and intensity). It acts as a voltage controlled optical filter: when the applied voltages are chosen appropriately the transducer can select separately the cyan and yellow channel emissions (wavelength and frequency) and also to quantify their relative intensities. A theoretical analysis supported by a numerical simulation is presented.

RESUMO

The occurrence of marine fungi associated with, pieces of wood, driftwood and dead plant stems, in the intertidal zone of two sandy beaches on the Portuguese west coast, was surveyed for 5 mo. Out of 90 samples scanned 70% had sporulating marine fungi. Thirty-five marine fungal taxa were identified (27 Ascomycota, six anamorphic fungi and two unidentified taxa), out of which 11 species were common to both beaches. Most taxa were infrequent (< or =10%), with the exception of Kirschsteiniothelia maritima (10-20%). The average number of fungi per sample was 0.91 for both beaches. Fifteen species are new records for Portugal. Samples were examined immediately after they were taken to the laboratory, as well as after incubation in moist chamber, for up to 10 mo.

RESUMO

The occurrence of fungi in the Mira salt marsh, Portugal was investigated for 12 months. Baits of Spartina maritima stems were exposed to permanent or temporary submersion at the upper and lower limits of the intertidal zone. The baits were observed for fruit bodies and spores directly and after incubation in moist chambers. Twenty six marine species were identified (17 Ascomycota, two Basidiomycota and seven mitosporic fungi). Twenty four are new records for Portugal. Nia globospora Barata and Basílio was published as a new species. Species were characterized with respect to frequency of occurrence, colonization capability and substrate succession. The diversity and similarity indexes of the fungi under different conditions were determined(AU)

RESUMO

Tumour necrosis factor alpha (TNFalpha) of peritoneal fluid is believed to have important pro-inflammatory and angiogenic activities in the complex mechanisms of development of peritoneal endometriotic lesions. We have evaluated the concentrations of TNFalpha and macrophages in peritoneal fluid of infertile women with minimal or mild endometriosis and related them to the presence of peritoneal red lesions alone (red lesions only group; n = 11) or their absence (non-red lesions group; n = 36). A group of 39 infertile normo-ovulatory patients with normal pelvic anatomy was used as controls. TNFalpha concentrations did not differ between controls and either group of patients. Patients with red lesions only had significantly lower concentrations of TNFalpha in peritoneal fluid (P < 0.05) and had a higher proportion of samples with undetectable concentrations (P < 0.05) than patients without red lesions. The significant difference in TNFalpha concentrations was present when comparing the groups of patients in the proliferative phase but not in the secretory phase. Macrophage concentrations were not different in the groups. Our findings are compatible with an impairment of macrophage function and therefore lend support to the theory that an inappropriate immunological response of the peritoneal environment to regurgitated endometrium may play a part in the initial phases of endometriotic implants.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: In a retrospective study we have reviewed the data of 570 consecutive IVF cycles in which a GnRH agonist (GnRHa) was started in the early follicular phase (long protocol). Cycles were divided in groups according to estradiol levels before HMG administration: A, < 20 pg/ml; B, 20 to 50 pg/ml; C, 51 to 100 pg/ml. Our objective was to determine if the degree of pituitary suppression had any effect on the ovarian response to stimulation by exogenous gonadotropins, and/or on the IVF outcome. RESULTS: There were no significant differences in cycle cancellation rates, no. of days of stimulation and ampoules of HMG, serum estradiol after HMG, no. of oocytes retrieved and fertilization rates between groups. Pregnancy rates (19.4%, 21% and 31.8%/cycle, and 24.1%, 27.5% and 37.8% / embryo transfer, respectively) and live-birth rates (16.2%, 16.1% and 25.0%/cycle, 20.1%, 21.2% and 29.7%/embryo transfer, respectively) were also not significantly different. CONCLUSIONS: The degree of pituitary suppression had no effects on either the ovarian response to gonadotropins (including HMG requirements) or the overall IVF results.

RESUMO

Multiple factors influence the probability of obtaining a pregnancy through in vitro fertilization (IVF) and embryo transfer (ET). This retrospective study was designed to assess their importance in order to improve prognostic ability and treatment success. 341 consecutive embryo transfer cycles using the same ovarian stimulation protocol were considered and divided in two main groups: 92 cycles in which a clinical pregnancy was achieved and 249 cycles without success. All the embryo transfers were performed in patients from the in vitro fertilization program of the Human Reproductive Unit, Santa Maria Hospital, Lisbon, between January 1991 and December 1993. No significant differences were found between the two groups studied concerning the IVF indications, ovarian response to the stimulation, sperm quality, oocyte maturation and mean number of oocytes retrieved per patient. The women's age was higher in the group which did not achieve a pregnancy, when compared with the pregnant group (p < 0.001), showing a decline of success after the age of 35. Overall oocyte fertilization rate was 88.2% in cycles with pregnancy and 83.5% in cycles without pregnancy (p < 0.02). In the pregnant patients, there was a significantly higher rate of embryo transfers in which all the embryos received had reached at least the four-cell stage at 42-43 hr postinsemination, compared with the non pregnant patients (82% versus 63%, p < 0.001). All the 92 pregnancies originated from transfers of at least one embryo that had undergone two or more mitotic divisions.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effectiveness of a diet based on dietary advice in treating obesity. DESIGN: Random clinical investigation of two groups of obese people. SETTING: Two health centres in the city of Huelva. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS: We randomly assigned two types of diet, one consisting of dietary advice (A) and the other consisting of low calorie daily menus (B). These were followed for a period of 2 months. At the end of the period we administered a questionnaire on the difficulties in adhering to the diet. 88.4% of those on diet A lost weight, compared with 55.5% of those on diet B (p < 0.025). There were mean decreases in cholesterol and triglyceride levels with diet A of 12.37 +/- 12 and 22.1 +/- 18 mg/dl respectively. In the case of diet B, there were increases of these levels of 8.4 +/- 13 and 2.09 +/- 14 mg/dl respectively (p < 0.05). Of those who followed diet A, 16.7% said they experienced difficulty in keeping to it, while 45.4% of those on diet B said they experienced such difficulty (p < 0.025). Altogether, 29.16% of those who followed diet B (p < 0.025). CONCLUSIONS: With the diet based on nutritional advice a larger number of the subjects lost weight, felt less hungry hunger; this diet is easier to keep to, and produces a significant decrease in cholesterol and triglyceride levels.

RESUMO

In order to assess the possible influence of gonadotrophin-releasing hormone analogue and human menopausal gonadotrophin on the occurrence of fractured zona oocytes (FZOs) in in-vitro fertilization (IVF) treatment cycles, we analysed 267 consecutive cycles in 199 patients. In 87 cycles, at least one fractured zona oocyte was recovered, and in 180 cycles only intact zona oocytes (IZOs) were recovered. FZOs represented 5.8% of all oocytes retrieved and 14.8% when only cycles with FZOs were considered. Serum oestradiol concentrations were significantly higher at day -3 and day -2 (P < 0.02) in cycles yielding at least one fractured zona oocyte compared to IZO cycles (day 0 = retrieval day), and there was a higher incidence of G terminal pattern of oestradiol curve (P < 0.01) in cycles with FZOs. The mean numbers of all oocytes retrieved and of mature oocytes were significantly higher in FZO than in IZO cycles (P < 0.001). The fertilization rate of mature oocytes was significantly reduced (P < 0.05) in cycles with one or more oocytes with fractured zonae. There was no significant difference in the number of embryos transferred, pregnancy and abortion rates in both groups. We conclude that although the occurrence of fractured zona oocytes is a frequent event, it does not affect the overall results of our IVF programme. Zona pellucida fragility may be the result of over-maturation of some oocytes.
